Abstract The novel oxonine 2, 4 have been synthesized by the reaction of 1,3-indandione with 4-bromo-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde and/or 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde in the presence of 1,3-diaminopropan-2-ol as green basic catalyst. On the other hand, the reaction of 1,3-cyclohexanediones with 2-hydroxy aromatic aldehydes under the same reaction condition afforded xanthenone derivatives 9-11. Graphical Abstract
