  Trimethoprim, i.e. 5-[(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl) methyl]-2,4-pyrimidinediamine of the formula is advantageously prepared by reacting two moles of 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzaldehyde with 1 mol of 3,3'-(phenylenedi-iminoldipropanenitrile in the presence of an alkaline condensing agent to form a condensation product of formula: which is then reacted with guanidine to give the compound of formula (I).
