    The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of arylalkylmethylsilanes of the formula I ##STR1## where X is CH.dbd.CH, N.dbd.CH, CH.dbd.N or S, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 independently of one another are H, halogen, (C.sub.1 to C.sub.4)alkyl, (C.sub.1 to C.sub.4)alkoxy, (C.sub.1 to C.sub.4)alkylthio, (C.sub.1 to C.sub.4)haloalkyl, (C.sub.1 to C.sub.4)haloalkoxy or (C.sub.1 to C.sub.4)haloalkylthio, R.sup.3 is (C.sub.1 to C.sub.6)alkyl and m and n are 0, 1 or 2, which comprises reacting dichloromethylsilane II ##STR2## first with an arylmagnesium halide of the formula III ##STR3## where R.sup.1, R.sup.2, m, n and X are as defined in Formula I and Hal is halogen, at temperatures of from -78.degree. to 0.degree. C., and subsequently with an alkylmagnesium halide of the formula IV R.sup.3 --Mg Hal (IV), where R.sup.3 is as defined in formula I and Hal is halogen, if appropriate in the presence of a solvent.

    Disclosed are a protected alcohol or derivative thereof, a surface-modified organic-inorganic hybrid glass, and preparation methods thereof. More specifically, disclosed are a protected alcohol or derivative thereof and a surface-modified organic-inorganic hybrid glass, which are prepared by allowing a silane compound, having vinyl or a vinyl derivative, to react with an alcohol or derivative thereof or with an organic-inorganic hybrid glass, in the presence of an acid catalyst, a transition metal catalyst and an organic solvent, so as to introduce an organic group thereto even at room temperature, as well as preparation methods thereof. The disclosed invention allows a functional group to be effectively introduced into alcohol or a derivative thereof or into an organic-inorganic hybrid glass, not only high temperatures but also room temperature, and thus is highly effective in introducing compounds having a thermally sensitive functional group, for example, natural compounds or proteins. Also, the invention makes it possible to introduce various organic groups and to separate and purify organic macromolecule-bonded organosilane compounds using a silica gel column so as to effectively introduce large organic functional groups to inorganic materials. Accordingly, the invention is highly useful in the chemical industry.

    This invention includes di- and tri(alkoxysilylalkyl)- or haloalkoxysilylalkylcyclic pentanes, which may have substituents thereon, including vinyl groups, and their use as waterproofing agents, as crosslinking agents in room temperature vulcanizing silicone caulks, in coating compositions and as surface treatments. The cyclic hydrocarbons are pentane (C.sub.s). The silane groups are attached to the ring through an alkyl group, which may have substituents thereon. Multiple silane groups may be attached to the ring. The silanes may have the standard substituents thereon, including alkoxy and halogens. The specific silanes contemplated herein have the following formula: R.sub.a X.sub.3-a Si(CR'.sub.2).sub.n !.sub.b cycloC.sub.5 R".sub.10-b where R is an alkyl or aryl group, X is a halogen or an alkoxy radical of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, aryloxy radical or oxime group, R' is a hydrogen or alkyl group of 1 to 3 carbon atoms, R" is a vinyl, alkyl, allyl, aryl, aryloxy or alkoxy group or hydrogen, a=0, 1 or 2, n=2 to 3 and if at least one R" is a vinyl or allyl group, b=1 to 5, otherwise b=2 to 5.
