  Photochemical reactions of theophylline with dialkyl and cyclic ethers in the presence of aliphatic ketones result in substitution of the hydrogen atom at C-8 position. The results indicate that both the α-alkoxyalkyl radicals derived by H-abstraction from ether and the ketyl radicals generated by photoreduction of the ketone are involved in the reactions.
