Provided is a process by which pyrimidinylacetonitrile derivatives can be prepared easily and efficiently from industrially available raw materials. Also provided are intermediates for the synthesis of the derivatives. A process for the preparation of pyrimidinylacetonitrile derivatives represented by general formula (3) [wherein X is a halogen atom, and R is an alkoxymethyl group], characterized by reacting a 2,4-dihalogeno-6-nitrobenzene derivative represented by general formula (1) [wherein X and R are each as defined above] with 4,6-dimethoxy-2-cyanomethylpyrimidine represented by general formula (2) [wherein Me represents a methyl group] in the presence of a base; and intermediates for the synthesis of the pyrimidinylacetonitrile derivatives.
Indolenine derivatives represented by general formula (I), wherein R' represents a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group, and X and Y may be the same or different from each other and each represents a methylene group or an oxygen atom are disclosed. They are useful compounds as intermediates for synthesizing cyanine compounds to be favorably used as organic near-infrared absorbing dyes for use in an optical disc recording medium using a semiconductor laser.

A transparent article having a thickness of at least 0.5 mm, which contains fine particles containing zirconium oxide as a main component in a resin and has a light transmittance of at least 60% at a wavelength of 405 nm and at least 70% at a wavelength of 589 nm in terms of the article having a thickness of 1 mm. The article has excellent transparency and high refractivity.
