Induction of liquid-crystallinity in molecular clips by binding of different guest molecules

The use of clip molecules based on diphenyl- and
dimethyl-glycoluril
as building blocks for liquid-crystalline materials is described. The
synthesis is performed by an esterification of hydroxy-derived clip
molecules with trialkoxybenzoyl chloride. 1H NMR titrations
show that these molecules, despite the steric crowding, are still able
to bind guest molecules in the cleft. The clip molecules show no
liquid-crystalline properties, except those based on dimethylglycoluril.
However, clips with alkyl chains of at least ten carbon atoms display
liquid-crystalline behaviour upon binding of guest molecules, which can
be tuned by the substituent of the guest molecules.

The structure and binding properties of a series of receptor molecules based on the building block diphenylglycoluril are described. These receptors bind dihydroxy-substituted aromatic guests in chloroform solution by means of hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking interactions.
