Two methods of epoxidation were investigated on a hybrid fluorocarbon-hydrocarbon olefin: RUCl3/bipyridine/NaIO4 and oxone/acetone. The best yield was obtained using the first method which was extended to the synthesis of new aromatic fluorinated epoxides with very good yields.

C-radical addition to the double bond of the title reagents and subsequent base-promoted homolytic Cα–Cβ cleavage leads to the formation of the corresponding allylated products along with ketyl radicals that act as single electron reductants to sustain the chain reactions. Substrate scope is documented and the role of base in the C–Cbond activation is studied by computation.

A process for producing a contact lens having a hydrophilic surface comprising subjecting a contact lens material comprising a copolymer prepared by copolymerizing a monomer mixture containing a polymerizable monomer (A) which is at least one member selected from a sugar ketal-containing (meth)acrylate and a sugar glycerol ketal-containing (meth)acrylate, and a polymerizable monomer (B) which is copolymerizable with the polymerizable monomer (A) to acid treatment, wherein the polymerizable monomer (B) contains a hydrophobic monomer which is at least one member selected from a silicon-containing monomer, a fluorine-containing monomer and a silicon- and fluorine-containing monomer, and a contact lens which has high oxygen permeability and of which surface shows stably excellent hydrophilic property and which is excellent in deposit resistance at the same time.

1,1,1-Trifluoro-2-arylethanes can be prepared by the trifluoromethyldehydroxylation of benzYl alcohols using the copper-dibromodifluoromethane-amide reaction system, although the yields are low. The mechanism of the reaction may involve chelation of the substrate to copper so that alpha-substituted benzyl alcohols and most other alcohols are unreactive.
