    A magnetic disc is disclosed, which comprises a disc-­shaped magnetic recording medium having a magnetic layer comprising a ferromagnetic powder and a bimder and a case having a liner of a nonwoven fabric comprising a polyester fiber or a polycaryl-nitril fibre in a ratio of not less than 30% by weight. The binder of the magnetic recording medium comprises a modified polyurethane resin containing a a polar group selected from the group consisting of a -SO₃M group, a -OSO₃M group, a -COOM group, a -PO(OM)₂ group and a -OPO(OM)₂ group, in which M is a hydrogen atom or a alkali metal atom, or a hydroxyl group provided that the polar group may be formed an intramolecular salt.

    According to this invention, there are provided a binder containing a polyurethane resin having an urethane bond and formed by the reaction of a diisocyanate and a polyol, said resin containing on the average at least 2.3 isocyanate groups in a molecule, having a number average molecular weight of at least 2,000 but at most 10,000 and containing less than 20 % of a component having a molecular weight of at most 1,000; a magneric recording layer or back coat layer using same; and a magnetic recording medium having same. Said magnetic recording medium is excellent in magnetic characteristics, durability and running property.

    A magnetic recording medium comprises a nonmagnetic base, on which are formed an electron-cured magnetic resin layer containing dispersed ferromagnetic powder and an electron-cured resin backcoating. The present invention uses an electron-curable vinyl chloride resin having sulfur-containing polar group in combination with an electron-curable urethane resin having a phosphorus-containing polar group. In this way, the dispersion of ferromagnetic powder, surface flatness and electromagnetic conversion characteristics can be improved. Further, an error rate can be reduced in high density digital recording. Further, storage property is excellent.

    This invention relates to coating compositions used for forming a magnetic layer on the surface of substrates to prepare magnetic recording media, e.g., recording tapes, of which the characteristic ingredient is a copolymeric resin. The copolymeric resin is a copolymer obtained by the copolymerization of comonomers in a specified proportion including (1) vinyl chloride, (2) vinyl acetate, and (3) an acrylate or methacrylate moiety having a sulfonic acid group or a metal or amine salt thereof. This copolymeric resin is advantageous in respect of imparting enhanced dispersion and magnetic property characteristics while also having desirable rheological characteristics and thermal stability.

    A magnetic recording medium includes a flexible substrate (10), an undercoating layer (20) formed on the substrate (10), and a magnetic layer (30) formed on the undercoating layer (20). The undercoating layer (20) contains a binder and nonmagnetic particles having an average particle size in the range of 0.01 to 0.20 µm. The content of the nonmagnetic particles in the undercoating layer (20) is in the range of 40 to 85% by weight. The magnetic layer (30) contains ferromagnetic powder, a binder and an abrasive having an average particle size in the range of 0.10 to 0.40 µm. The magnetic layer (30) has a thickness in the range of 0.10 to 0.30 µm and contains the abrasive in the range of 1 to 5 parts by weight relative to 100 parts by weight of the ferromagnetic powder. With this arrangement, the magnetic recording medium is capable of high density recording and excellent in electromagnetic transducer property and durability.
