Compounds of formula (IIa):
are provided where:
X is a group capable of being cleaved from the α-carbon atom to form an ion of formula (I')
C is a carbon atom bearing a single positive charge or a single negative charge;
The invention further provides compounds of formula (IIb):
where:
X is a counter-ion to C.
The compounds of formula (IIa) and (IIb) may form ions of formula (I') by either cleaving the C-X bond between X and the α-carbon atoms in the case of the compounds of formula (IIa) or dissociating X in the case of compounds of formula (IIb).
Desulfurization of Thioketones and Thioamides with Diphosphorus Tetraiodide

On heating with diphosphorus tetraiodide in benzene, thioketones undergo reductive desulfurization to afford parent hydrocarbons, while thioamides are slowly converted into nitriles.
Diaryl thioketones are selectively reduced with ytterbium metal to diarylmethanethiols, diarylmethanes or tetraarylethylenes, via thiometallacycle intermediates which undergo electrophilic coupling at thiocarbonyl carbon and sulfur.

9-Fluorenethione S-p-toluenesulfonimide reacted as a 1,3-dipole with imines, oximes, and thiones to form (3+2)cycloadducts, while with symmetrical azines and aldehydes, unsymmetrical azines, N-(p-tolylsulfonyl) imines and fluorenone were obtained as a result of the decomposition of the cycloadducts.

Reaction of diarylmethylenetriphenylphosphoranes with sulfur gave thiobenzophenones and triphenylphosphine sulfide in good yields. Reaction of benzylidenetriphenylphosphoranes with sulfur gave triphenylphosphine sulfide and 5,7-diphenyl-l,2,3,4,6-pentathiepane. More active alkylidenetriphenylphosphoranes such as isopropylidene- or sec-butylidenetriphenylphosphorane gave the corresponding phosphonium
