  (EN) Compounds of formula (I) and their pharmaceutically acceptable salts in which R1 is hydrogen or hydroxy; R2 is hydrogen; or R1 and R2 are joined together so that CR1-CR2 is a double bond; X is selected from -CH2CH2-, -CH=CH-, -C=C, -CH2O-, -OCH2-, -CH2NH-, -NHCH2-, -CH2CO-, -COCH2-, -NHCO-, -CONH-, -CH2S-, -SCH2-, wherein the sulphur atom in the latter two groups may optionally bear one or two oxygen atoms; Ar1 is a phenylene moiety; Ar2 is phenyl; and wherein one or both of Ar1 and Ar2 may be optionally unsubstituted or independently substituted by one or more substituents selected from halogeno, hydroxy, amino, nitro, cyano, carboxy, carbamoyl, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, alkoxy, alkylamino, di-alkylamino, N-alkylcarbamoyl, N,N-di-alkylcarbamoyl, alkoxycarbonyl, alkylthio, alkylsulphinyl, alkylsulphonyl, halogenoalkyl, alkanoyl, methylenedioxy and alkanoylamino; are inhibitors of squalene synthase and hence useful in treating medical conditions in which a lowering of cholesterol is beneficial, such as hypercholesterolemia and atherosclerosis. Ces composés sont des inhibiteurs de squalène synthase et par conséquent ils sont utiles pour traiter des pathologies médicales dans lesquelles une baisse du cholestérol est souhaitable, telles que l'hypercholestérolémie et l'athérosclérose. Des procédés de préparation de ces dérivés, des compositions pharmaceutiques contenant ces derniers et leur utilisation en médecine sont également décrits.
