    A method of effecting cross-linking of a resin comprises generating vinyl sulfonyl moieties in situ with the resin, said sulfonyl moieties then undergoing a reaction which effects cross-linking of the resin. The vinyl sulfonyl moieties may be generated as a result of a loss of a liquid carrier for the resin to be cross-linked. The cross-linking reaction may result from reaction of the vinyl sulfonyl moieties with nucleophilic groups in the resin composition. The resin may be a co-polymer of a compound of formula (IV) with other olefinically unsaturated monomers.

    A carrier particularly suitable for supporting biological substances is composed of a particulate polymer prepared by polymerizing at least one monomer of formula: (in which R1 and R2 are the same or different and each represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group, R3 represents a straight or branched chain alkylene group optionally having a hydroxy substituent, X represents a halogen atom, m is 0 or an integer from 1 to 10 and n is an integer from 1 to 5) optionally in admixture with at least one other copolymerizable monomer. Biological substances which may be supported by the carrier include immunoreactive substances, enzymes, cells and cell-discriminating substances.

A paint composition comprises the transparent resin obtained by polymerizing the monomer of the formula (I).
