The reaction of phosphorous hexamethyltriamide with trimethylsilyl iodide or bromide provides a convenient synthesis of the corresponding N,N,N',N'-tetramethylphosphorodiamidous halide. Low temperature 31P NMR studies gave evidence of the formation of a phosphonium salt-type complex with direct P-Si bonding in the first step of the reaction.
