    In a process for oxidizing a hydrocarbon to the corresponding hydroperoxide, alcohol, ketone, carboxylic acid or dicarboxylic acid, a reaction medium comprising a hydrocarbon is contacted with an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a catalyst comprising a cyclic imide of the general formula (I): wherein each of R1 and R2 is independently selected from hydrocarbyl and substituted hydrocarbyl radicals having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, or from the groups SO3H, NH2, OH and NO2, or from the atoms H, F, Cl, Br and I provided that R1 and R2 can be linked to one another via a covalent bond; each of Q1 and Q2 is independently selected from C, CH, N, and CR3; each of X and Z is independently selected from C, S, CH2, N, P and an element of Group 4 of the Periodic Table; Y is O or OH; k is O, 1, or 2; 1 is 0, 1, or 2; m is 1 to 3; and R3 can be any of the entities listed for R1. The contacting is conducted under conditions such as to maintain the concentration of both water and organic acids in the reaction medium below 50 ppm.

    In a process for producing sec-butylbenzene, a C4 olefinic hydrocarbon feedstock comprising isobutene and at least one n-butene is contacted with methanol and/or water in the presence of an acid catalyst to selectively oxygenate isobutene to produce an effluent stream rich in n-butene and containing less isobutene than the feedstock. The effluent stream is then contacted with benzene under alkylation conditions and in the presence of an alkylation catalyst to produce alkylation stream comprising sec-butylbenzene.

    A process for producing sec-butylbenzene comprises contacting a feed comprising benzene and ethylene under alkylation conditions with catalyst comprising (i) a molecular sieve having an X-ray diffraction pattern including d-spacing maxima at 12.4±0.25, 6.9±0.15, 3.57±0.07 and 3.42±0.07 Angstrom and (ii) at least one metal selected from Group 10 of the Periodic Table of Elements to produce an akylation effluent comprising sec-butylbenzene.

    A process for producing bisphenol-A and co-producing methyl ethyl ketone comprises alkylating benzene with a C3 alkylating agent in a first reaction zone to produce cumene and alkylating benzene with a C4 alkylating agent in a second reaction zone separate from said first reaction zone to produce sec­butylbenzene. The cumene and sec-butylbenzene are then oxidized, either separately or as a mixture, to produce the corresponding hydroperoxides and the hydroperoxides are cleaved, either separately or as a mixture, to produce phenol, acetone and methyl ethyl ketone. The phenol, methyl ethyl ketone and acetone are separated and at least part of the acetone and phenol are reacted to produce bisphenol-A.

    A process for oligomerizing isobutene comprises contacting a feedstock comprising isobutene with a catalyst comprising a MCM-22 family molecular sieve under conditions effective to oligomerize the isobutene, wherein said conditions including a temperature from about 45°C to less than 140°C. The isobutene may be a component of a hydrocarbon feedstock containing at least one additional C4 alkene.
