A method for preparing 4,4‴-dihydroxyquater-phenyl or derivatives thereof comprising dehalogenating and dimerizing 4-hydroxy-4′-halogenobiphenyl or derivatives thereof in an inert organic polar solvent, in the presence of at least one member selected from the group consisting of hydroxides, carbonates or bicarbonates of alkali metals or alkaline earth metals, utilizing palladium as a catalyst is herein disclosed. According to this method, the end products having high purity can be obtained with a high yield without requiring severe reaction conditions.
