Mechanism and utility of the dirhenium decacarbonyl catalyzed formation of silyl ethers

A mechanism for dirheniumdecacarbonyl catalyzed formation of silyl ethers is proposed. This reaction is a good alternative to the standard silylation procedure involving the use of more expensive silyl chlorides; even tertiary silyl ethers are readily formed.
