An organ to be transplanted, such as a kidney, can effectively be preserved for an increased period of time by perfusion using a perfusate which is made of a Ringer's solution modified by increasing its potassium ion content to 8-20 meq/liter with a stably emulsified perfluorocarbon compound and dissolved albumin. A preferred concentration of the perfluorocarbon compound, for example perfluorodecalin, is 7.5 to 12.5%(W/V) and that of albumin is 1-8%(W/V) based on the perfusate.
Gas transport agents containing a perfluorocyclocarbon and an amine oxide are disclosed. These compositions provide emulsions or solutions for use in oxygen transport, particularly in animals. They are therefore useful as artificial blood compositions. Large concentrations of perfluorocarbons may be employed even up to 50% or more by volume in preparing emulsions, microemulsions or solutions. The emulsions or solutions are stable under room temperature storage conditions
Extraocular ophthalmic preparations or devices useful as therapeutic, diagnostic lubricating or protective agents are disclosed. Perfluorocarbon films or gels are employed extraocularly as contact lenses. Liquid perfluorocarbons and substituted derivatives are the active components of the ophthalmic preparations. The neat perfluorocarbon liquids are not aqueous, wherefore, isotonicity and pH need not be considered in their preparation. Liquid sterility may be maintained without the addition of preservatives. Cornea and conjunctiva surfaces are provided with greater amounts of oxygen when the perfluorcarbon liquids are employed as eye drops. Transparent contact lenses having oxygen permeable properties are provided by the extraocular perfluorocarbon films or discs. Emulsions of perfluorocarbons in water are also suitable for all of the above uses and as carriers for drugs, antibiotics, hormones and therapeutic agents.

Compounds having a polyhydroxylated hydrophilic moiety, a highly fluorinated moiety and a functional junction group linking said moieties together, wherein said hydrophilic moiety is derived from a polyol or an aminopolyol, and wherein said highly fluorinated moiety consists of a fluorocarbon group wherein at least 50 % of the atoms bonded to the carbon skeleton are fluorine atoms, the other atoms bonded to the carbon skeleton being hydrogen, chlorine or bromine atoms, said highly fluorinated moiety containing at least 4 fluorine atoms ; as well as the internal ethers and ketals thereof ; process for their preparation ; and compositions containing said compounds as surfactants together with non polar compounds, for use as gas carriers.
A stable concentrated aqueous emulsion of perfluorochemical, a phospholipid and a triglyceride of fatty acids has been demonstrated which has enhanced stability, diminished particle size and heightened tolerance by biological systems. The emulsion has utility as an oxygen transport medium, such as artificial blood. The emulsion can optionally include addition emulsifiers of SURFYNOL®SE surfactant and PLURONIC® P-105 surfactant. The emulsion is produced using an improved emulsification technique.
