which comprises subjecting an alkanolamine represented by the following formula

wherein R is as defined, X represents the OH group or the NH₂ group, and Y represents the NH₂ group when X is the OH group, and the OH group when X is the NH₂ group,
to intramolecular dehydration reaction in the gaseous phase in the presence of a catalyst; wherein the catalyst contains acid sites having an acid-base strength (Ho) of from +4.0 to +7.0 and base sites having an acid-base strength of from +7.0 to +9.3.
