The present invention is directed to a method for impregnating a preformed polyurethane medical device with an antimicrobial quaternary ammonium compound which comprises the steps of (A) contacting said device with a solution containing said compound in a chlorinated or fluorinated hydrocarbon solvent thereby impregnating the device, and (B) removing the solvent, wherein the antimicrobial quaternary ammonium compound is represented by Formula (I):
including optically active isomeric forms thereof, wherein (a) R₁, R₂, R₃, and R₄ are independently selected from the group consisting of straight- or branched-chain, saturated or unsaturated alkyl groups having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, or (b) R₁, R₂, and R₃ are as defined above and R₄ is selected from the group consisting of aryl alkyl, chloroaryl alkyl, aryloxy alkyl, and trialkyl ammonium alkyl, or (c) R₁ and R₂ are as defined above and R₃ and R₄ are independently selected from the group consisting of aryl alkyl, monoalkylaryloxy alkyleneoxy alkyl, and dialkylaryloxy alkyleneoxy alkyl, or (d) R₁ is as defined above and R₂, R₃, R₄, and the nitrogen atom are members of a heterocyclic ring, and X⁻ is a halogen.
