1-Phenethylimidazole compounds of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are independently hydrogen or halogen, Z is a mono or disubstituted phenyl moiety of the formula: ##STR2## or a 2 or 3-thienyl moiety of formula: ##STR3## wherein R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are independently hydrogen, halogen, (lower) alkyl, or trifluoromethyl, with the proviso that R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 can not both be trifluoromethyl and the antimicrobial acid addition salts thereof are useful as antifungal and antibacterial agents.

All the chlorides studied showed antimicrobialactivity. The relationship between the chemical structure and antimicrobialactivity was analyzed by rough sets.
