Dimethylaluminium methaneselenolate (Me 2 AlSeMe, 1) acts as an acyltransferagent for esterification. In cases of direct macrolactonisation (n = 10-12), this selenium-aluminium complex preferentially creates symmetric macrodiolides rather than macrolides.
