The disclosure encompasses methods of providing a therapeutic method of reducing the effects in an animal or human of neural damage, in particular, but not only, neural damage induced by the onset of a seizure. It has been surprisingly found that neural protection resulting from endogenous adenosine interactions with the adenosine receptor sub-type may be effectively enhanced by preventing the RGS4 protein from inhibiting cell signaling pathways activated through ligand binding to the A1 R receptor. It has been found that antagonists of the RGS4 protein or disruption in the availability of the scaffold protein neurabin allow endogenous adenosine to activate the A1 R found on neural cells and thereby provide targeted protection to these cell types.
