    The invention relates to N-pyridylsulfonyl-N'-pyrimidinyl- and -N'-triazinylureas of the formula I ##STR1## wherein A is a C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 alkynyl radical, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl radical which is substituted by halogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkylthio, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkylsulfinyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkylsulfonyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 haloalkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 haloalkylthio, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 haloalkylsulfinyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 haloalkylsulfonyl, or is a C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 alkenyl radical which is unsubstituted or substituted as for C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, or is a phenyl radical which is unsubstituted or substituted by halogen, cyano, nitro, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 haloalkyl, an --X--C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxycarbonyl, amino, mono- or di-(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl)amino, carbamoyl, mono- or di-(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl)carbamoyl, sulfamoyl, mono- or di-(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl)sulfamoyl radical or A--X-- forms an amino radical --NR.sub.6 R.sub.7, E is the methine group or nitrogen, R.sub.1 is hydrogen, halogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 haloalkoxy, C.sub.2 -C.sub.5 alkoxyalkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkylthio, C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkylsulfinyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkylsulfonyl, R.sub.2 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl which is unsubstituted or substituted by 1 to 3 halogen atoms, or is C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkoxy, R.sub.3 is hydrogen, halogen, an amino group --NR.sub.4 R.sub.5, or C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl which is unsubstituted or substituted by 1 to 3 halogen atoms, or is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy which is unsubstituted or substituted by methoxy, ethoxy or 1 to 3 halogen atoms, R.sub.4 is hydrogen or methyl, R.sub.5 is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 alkyl or methoxy, R.sub.6 and R.sub.7 are each independently hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 alkenyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 alkynyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 alkoxyalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 cyanoalkyl, or both together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached also form a saturated 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring system which may also contain oxygen, sulfur or an --NR.sub.8 radical, R.sub.8 is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl or benzyl, and X is oxygen, sulfur, or a sulfinyl or sulfonyl bridge and to the salts thereof with amines, alkali metal bases or alkaline earth metal bases. These compounds have good pre- and postemergence selective herbicidal and growth regulating properties.
