    Aromatic sulfide/sulfone polymers are prepared by initially contacting a dihaloaromatic sulfone, an alkali metal sulfide, an organic amide, and, optionally, an alkali metal carboxylate under polymerization conditions and subsequently at or near completion of the polymerization reaction, adding an end-capping agent comprising additional dihaloaromatic sulfone to the reaction mixture producing a polymer exhibiting improved physical properties including melt flow stability. The resulting polymers have utility as coatings, films, molded objects, filaments, fibers, and the like.

    A process is provided for the production of aromatic sulfide/sulfone polymers which involves contacting under suitable polymerization reaction conditions: (1) at least one dihaloaromatic sulfone, (2) at least one organic amide, (3) at least one alkali metal hydrosulfide, (4) water, and (5) at least one member selected from the group consisting of (a) alkali metal carbonates and (b) mixtures of alkali metal carbonates with alkali metal hydroxides wherein said mixtures have at least about 0.5 mole percent alkali metal carbonate.

    An improved process for producing poly(arylene sulfide sulfone) of increased molecular weight is provided. The process employs an Li salt of C₁ - C₂₀ carboxylic acid as a polymerization auxiliary and is carried out in an organic amide solvent by reacting a dihalogenated aromatic sulfone with an alkali metal sulfide in the presence of 10 - 15 moles of water per mole of the alkali metal sulfide at temperatures within the range of from 160°C to 230°C.

    Poly(arylene sulfide/sulfone) polymers are treated in order to increase melt stability and decrease impurities by contacting the poly(arylene sulfide/sulfone) polymer with a soluble zinc compound, followed by contacting the polymer with an acidic solution.
