  The present invention provides a p-terphenyl compound of formula (3): wherein R7 and R8 each independently are H, alkyl, aralkyl, halogen or optionally substituted phenyl; and R9 is H, alkyl, alkoxy, aralkyl, halogen or phenyl; and Ar is a bivalent group of optionally substituted aromatic hydrocarbon (excluding indan); with the proviso that if Ar is phenyl and either one of R7 and R8 is H, then the other is a substituent group which is different from R9 or is the same having a different substituted position. Also, the invention provides the use of the p-terphenyl compound of formula (3) as a charge transporting agent.
