  The synthesis of imidazolinium salts from the reaction of formamidines and (2-bromoethyl)diphenylsulfonium triflate is described. A variety of symmetrical and unsymmetrical imidazolinium Inflate salts were synthesized in high yield in short reaction times under mild conditions. Aromatic and aliphatic N-substituents work well.   N 2-Aryl-N 1-alkylformamidines are conveniently and rapidly prepared by the reaction of an aromatic amine with ethyl N-cyanoformimidate to give the N 2-aryl-N 1-cyanoformamidine. Addition of this intermediate to an excess of an alkyl- or dialkylamine results in the formation of the title compounds in high yield and satisfactory purity. A mechanism for this reaction is proposed and discussed.
