  This invention provides smoking compositions which contain a novel vanillyl 5-hydroxyester flavorant-release additive. Under cigarette smoking conditions, a combustible filler and/or paper wrapper additive such as 4′-formyl-2′-methoxyphenyl 5-hydroxy-2-isopropylhexanoate pyrolyzes into vanillin and 2-isopropyl-5-hydroxyhexanoic acid delta lactone flavorants as volatile components of the cigarette smoke.

  There is provided a new use of a hydroxydihydrobovolide compound having effects on preventing hair loss and growing hairs. Since the hydroxydihydrobovolide compound has effects on increasing survival rates of human hair follicle dermal papilla cells and hair outer root sheath cells and also growing a length of hairs, the compound is of great value as a pharmaceutical composition or cosmetic composition for improving scalp or preventing hair loss. Further, since the hydroxydihydrobovolide compound is isolated and purified from Eucheuma cottonii that is red algae and does not induce cytotoxicity, it is stable in the body and thus can be used as a raw material for functional health food.
