    Disclosed is a method of inhibiting the growth of microorganisms in, at, or on a locus subject to microbial attack, comprising introducing to said locus an antimicrobially effective amount of at least one alkoxy disulfide of formula:R1-CHR3-O-S-S-O-CHR4-R2 wherein: R1, R2are independently selected from 5- or 6-membered aromatic rings, optionally substituted with up to 3 e· donating substituents of which 2 can optionally be combined to form another ring; and R3, R4are independently selected from H, CH3, or CH2CH3.

    The invention herein disclosed comprises the use of oxazolidines, nitroalcohols, nitroamines, aminonitroalcohols, imines, hexahydropyrimidines, nitrones, hydroxylamines, nitro-olefins and nitroacetals to serve as hardeners and/or as catalysts for curing phenolic resins. The hardeners and catalysts described in the invention can be applied in any application where phenolic resins are used, including but not limited to adhesives, molding, coatings, pultrusion, prepregs, electronics, composites, fire resistant, and flame-retardant end uses.

Also disclosed herein are methods of altering a material's property such as service life, flexability, or rigidity, by incorporation of an enzyme into a material capable of being chemically crosslinked by the activity of a lipolytic enzyme, a hydrolase, and/or a urease.
