Synthesis of New Liquid Crystals with 2,3,4,9-Tetrahydro-1H-Fluorene Moiety

A new range of liquid crystals containing the 2,3,4,9-tetrahydro-1H-fluorene system have been prepared and its thermal properties were examined. The mesomorphic properties are compared with those of the fluorene and trans-cyclohexane derivatives. Introduction of 2,3,4,9-tetrahydro-1H-fluorene in typical liquid crystal structure leads to decrease of melting point and the clearing point values. The chemical structures and mesogenic properties for the reported novel compounds are discussed.
