Car☐amidrazones1–3 were condensed with thienylglyoxal hydrates5 to form thienyl substituted 1,2,4-triazines6–8. The 1,2,4-triazines are easily transformed to pyridines9–11 in a [4+2] cycloaddition. This reaction sequence offers a new and simple access to thienyl substituted 2,6-oligopyridines with defined regiochemistry.
