    Disclosed is an organic electroluminescent device (organic EL device) which is improved in luminous efficiency, fully secured of driving stability, and simple in structure and also disclosed is a heterocyclic compound useful for the said device. Specifically, the heterocyclic compound is represented by the following general formula (I) and the organic EL device comprises an organic layer containing the said heterocyclic compound. In general formula (I), X 1 and X 2 respectively denote O, S, or N—R, R denotes a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, or a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group, Ar 1 , Ar 2 , Ar 3 , and Ar 4 respectively denote a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group, Ar 1 , Ar 2 , and the nitrogen atom bonded thereto or Ar 3 , Ar 4 , and the nitrogen atom bonded thereto may form a nitrogen-containing hetero ring, and m and n respectively denote an integer of 1 or 2.

    This invention relates to an organic electroluminescent element (organic EL element) utilizing phosphorescence which shows improved luminous efficiency and driving stability and has a simple structure. The organic EL element comprises an anode, organic layers containing a hole-transporting layer, a light-emitting layer, and an electron-transporting layer, and a cathode piled one upon another on a substrate with the hole-transporting layer disposed between the light-emitting layer and the anode and the electron-transporting layer disposed between the light-emitting layer and the cathode. The light-emitting layer contains a compound represented by the following general formula (I) as a guest material and an organic metal complex containing at least one metal selected from ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, silver, rhenium, osmium, iridium, platinum, and gold as a guest material; in general formula (I), R 1 -R 6 are independently hydrogen atoms, alkyl groups, aralkyl groups, alkenyl groups, cyano groups, alkoxy groups, aromatic hydrocarbon groups, or aromatic heterocyclic groups.

The organic EL device comprises an anode 2 , organic layers containing a hole-transporting layer 4 , a light-emitting layer 5 , and an electron-transporting layer 6 , and a cathode 7 piled one upon another on a substrate 1 , the hole-transporting layer is disposed between the light-emitting layer and the anode, the electron-transporting layer is disposed between the light-emitting layer and the cathode, and the light-emitting layer comprises an organic Al complex represented by the following general formula (I) as a host material and an organic Ir complex represented by the following general formula (II) as a guest material. In formula (I), L is ArO—, ArCOO—, Ar 3 SiO—, Ar 3 GeO—, or Ar 2 AlO—.
