The present invention relates to acrylic copolymer materials, useful for forming ophthalmic devices, and process for making the same. The acrylic copolymer material comprises polymer units derived from an α,β-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer and an aryl (meth)acrylate monomer. Specifically, an α,β-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer represented by formula (I):
wherein R1 and R2 independently represent a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having up to 6 carbon atoms, and R3 represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group; and an aryl (meth)acrylate monomer represented by formula (II):
wherein X represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, and R represents a covalent bond, or a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbyl group and Ar is any aromatic ring, such as benzene, which can be unsubstituted or substituted with H, CH3, C2H5, n-C3H7, iso-C3H7, OCH3, C6H11, Cl, Br, C6H5 or CH2C6H5.
