Synthesis of 4-ylidenebutenolides and 4-oxo-2-enoic acid methyl esters from 5-methoxy-2-furyl carbinols

5-methoxy-2-furyl carbinols (8) were converted by ZnCl2 catalysis into a 3:1 mixture of 4-ylidene-butenolides (9) and 4-oxo-2-enoic acid methyl esters (10). The carbonium ion 12 is the key intermediate, the stability of which made the conversion very fast providing high yields.
