Abstract Carbenes and silylenes with a variety of substituents have been isolated and characterized in low temperature matrices. Reactions of these species with small molecules, especially 3O2, have been studied. The structure of the primary addition products as well as the reactivity as a function of the spin-state (triplet T or singlet S) is discussed.
