  • Synthesis and Structure-Activity Relationships of Phaffiaol and Related Antioxidants.

    Total synthesis of a novel long chain alkyl phenol, phaffiaol (1), a potent antioxidant isolated from Phaffia rhodozyma, was achieved via three reaction steps starting from 3, 5-dibromosalicylaldehyde (2). We also prepared several types of long chain alkyl phenol having different aromatic rings or different carbon length, and evaluated their antioxidative activity using the rabbit erythrocyte membrane ghost system. Amongst these compounds, the novel methoxy phenol derivatives (6c, d, 7) having a heptadecyl moiety at the ortho-position to the hydroxy group, were approximately 2 times more active than α-tocopherol. In addition, 4-methoxy-2-pentadexylphenol (10h), which has a 15-carbon length in the side chain moiety, showed the maximum activity.

    The invention is a preparation process of alkylcyclohexanol alkylene oxide adduct which contains almost no alkylphenol alkylene oxide adduct 1) in the absence of a solvent, 2) in the presence of a saturated hydrocarbon solvent, or 3) in the presence of water. The invention can prepare alkylcyclohexanol alkylene oxide having a 200 ppm or less content of alkylphenol and alkylphenol alkylene oxide adduct. The alkylcyclohexanol alkylene oxide adduct obtained in the process of the invention has less ultraviolet absorption and fluorescence due to alkylphenol alkylene oxide adduct and is thus useful for spectrometric analysis of protein and further has excellent properties in the field of detergent and other common uses of surface active agents.

    Provided are a polycarbonate resin composition which does not contain halogen and phosphorus as a flame retardant component and which is excellent in a fluidity while maintaining a flame resistance, a heat resistance and an impact resistance and a molded article thereof. The polycarbonate resin composition comprises (A) 60 to 97 mass % of an aromatic polycarbonate resin composition and 3 to 40 mass % of (B) an acrylonitrile-styrene base resin having a melt flow rate (MFR) of 5 or more at 200° C. and a load of 5 kg, wherein it is blended with 0 to 37 mass parts of (C) an impact resistance-improving agent, 0 to 3 mass parts of (D) an organic alkali metal salt and/or an organic alkali earth metal salt, 0 to 3 mass parts of (E) a functional group-containing silicone compound, 0 to 55 mass parts of (F) an inorganic filler and 0 to 2 mass parts of (G) a polyfluoroolefin resin each per total 100 mass parts of (A) and (B).
