  The present invention concerns a method for extracting cytisine from biomaterial wherein the biomaterial is contacted with an alkaline aqueous solution, but in the absence of any other co-solvent such as an organic phase. Cytisine is recovered from the alkaline aqueous extract by extraction of the extract with rapeseed oil which in turn is extracted with an acidic aqueous phase.
