    Anion and cation effects of ionic liquids and ammonium salts evaluated as dehydrating agents for super-heavy crude oil: Experimental and theoretical points of view

    One series of ionic liquids (IL), [TOA](+) [Y](-) (where [Y](-) = [Cl](-), [HSO4](-) or[H2PO4](-)), and new ammonium salts, [OCD](+) [Y](-) (where [Y] = [HSO4](-), [MeSO3](-) or [MePhSO3](-)), were evaluated as demulsifying agents for super-heavy crude oil, at API = 639 degrees (MOl) and API = 7.13 (MO2), with 8.46 and 8.94 wt.% of asphaltenes, respectively, at dosages of 1000 and 1500 ppm, using a conventional heating bottle test. At 1000 ppm, the ranking of water removal efficiency for the [TOA](+) [Y](-) series (in MO1 and MO2, in order to reach 96.7% and 95.4%, respectively) was [Cl](-) > [HSO4](-) > [H2PO4](-). For the [OCD](+) [Y](-) series, the rankings for efficiency at 360 min were [HSO4](-) > [MeSO3](-), reaching approximately 27% in MO2, whereas [MePhSO3](-) reached 1% in MO2.At a dosage of 1500 ppm, the [TOA](+) [Y](-) series achieved 100% water removal, showing the same order at 1000 ppm. For [OCD](+) [Y](-), the order at 24 h was [HSO4](-) > [MeSO3](-) > [MePhSO3](-) for MO1 and MO2 at maximums of 85.5% and 92.3%, respectively. [OCD](+) [HSO4](-) was an efficient demulsifier in tests of long duration. Quantum parameters were obtained at the semiempirical RM1 level, in order to establish a correlation with the experimental results. The molecular volume (V-m), molecular refractivity (MR), dipolar moment (mu) and mean polarizability (alpha) of the cation and anion fragments were important factors driving the dewatering process. Vm, MR and a were shown to have a direct relationship with water removal efficiency. Furthermore, absolute softness and the electrophilicity index of the cation fragments were calculated at the density functional theory (DFT) level. An increase in the softness and electrophilicity of the cations correlated with lesser effectiveness as demulsifiers. Finally, the partition coefficient of the cations showed that if the viscosity of the crude oil is low, it is possible to use ILs with a low partition coefficient (log P), but if the viscosity is high, the log P of IL should be near the [TOA](+) [Cl](-) value.(c) 2014 Elsevier B.V.     Monomers of the general formula wherein X is halo, n is an integer from 1 to 4, YO is an anion, R is C1 to C4 straight chain alkyl or hydroxy substituted C1 to C4 straight chain alkyl, and R1 and R2 independently comprise one of: lower alkyl, iodo, bromo, chloro, lower alkoxy, amido, monohydrocarbylamido, dihydrocarbylamido, hydrocarbyloxy, carbonyloxy and hydrogen are disclosed in addition to polymers thereof and copolymers containing units of them. The monomers and polymers are stable at acid pH values, although capable of reacting with other reactants at the hydroxyl and/or halide group. On heating, they are self-reactive and can become crosslinked. At alkaline pH values they become self-reactive; the polymers crosslink slowly even at room temperature, with the crosslinking increasing rapidly on heating. The polymers are useful, inter alia, as wet-strength agents in the making of paper.

    Monoethylenically unsaturated quaternary monomers of the formula: wherein R1 is a (Ci-C4) straight chain alkyl group optionally hydroxy-substituted, nis 0 or 1, R2 is H or OH, R3 is an alkenoxy group containing an allyl group or a carbalkenoxy group containing a double bond functionally equivalent to an isolated terminal double bond, X is halo, and Y⊖ is an anion may be readily polymerisable with vinyl acetate to provide la- tices capable of low energy cure. The invention embraces addition polymers of such monomers and methods of producing both the monomers and the polymers. The monomers and polymers are stable at acid pH values. At alkaline pH values they become self-reactive; the polymers crosslink slowly even at room temperature, with the crosslinking increasing rapidly on heating. The polymers are useful, inter alia, as wet-strength agents in the making of paper.

    Structured particle latexes are prepared by emulsion polymerizing monomeric materials in aqueous media in one or more stages wherein in at least one of the stages a reactive polymeric surfactant is used. The resulting latex contains nonionic particles to which are bound the reactive polymeric surfactant which forms a layer containing stabilizing anionic or cationic groups such as sulfonic, sulfonium, quaternary ammonium, or sulfonate groups chemically bound at or near the surface of the polymer particles dispersed in the aqueous media. These latexes are particu- lady suitable for beater additives, coatings and composite binders.
