    The synthesis, characterization and antimicrobial activity of Cu(II) complexes of some p-substituted aniline Schiff base ligands have been carried out. The Schiff bases were obtained from salicylaldehyde and o-vanillin. The Cu(II) complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, conductivity measurement, infrared and electronic spectral data. The complexes were obtained either as metal chelates [Cu(L)2] or Schiff base adducts (CuCl2.2LH).xH2O. The metal chelates were non-electrolytes while the Schiff base adducts exhibited 1:1 or 2:1 electrolytes in methanol. The Cu(II) complexes exhibited slight antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli ATCC® 8739™*, Staphylococcus aureus subsp. aureus ATCC® 6538™*, Bacillus subtilis subsp. spizizenii ATCC® 6633™* and Candida albicans ATCC® 2091™*.     1-(4-chlorophenylimino)methyl}-2-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenol were adopted wherein the 4-chloro (4-Cl) and 4-methyl (4-CH3) containing compounds crystallized into orthorhombic lattice with a non-centrosymmetric space group P212121. The relationship between the stabilization of bonding involved in heteronuclear six-membered ring of the tautomer and the conformation of the molecules in crystal phase was reported.

    The solvent-free reaction between o-vanillin and p-toluidine was investigated using NMR, DSC and XRD analyses. At room temperature, o-vanillin and p-toluidine react in a liquid eutectic formed upon grinding, while below 10 °C the same materials appear to react without the formation of a liquid phase, which most likely remains hidden behind solid reactants and reaction products.

  • Synthesis, Crystal Structure and DNA-Binding of Lanthanum Complex with Schiff Base Derived from o-Vanillin and p-Toluidine

    A new complex [La(NO3)3(C2H5OH)(C15H15NO2)2] was synthesized from lanthanum nitrate and Schiff base (C15H15NO2, derived form o-vanillin and p-toluidine) by refluxing in ethanol. Its crystal structure was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction method. The complex is crystallize in triclinic, space group P-1, with a = 0.79851(3) nm, b = 1.47473(5) nm, c = 1.63872(6) nm, a = 73.546(2)º, b = 86.769(2)º, g = 79.767(2)º, V = 1.82123(1) nm3, Z = 2, Mr = 852.56, F(000) = 1862, Dc = 1.555 g cm-3, μ(M0Ka) = 1.056 mm-1. It turned out that six oxygen atoms from three nirtate anions, one oxygen atom in ethanol and two phenolate oxygen atoms from two Schiff base ligands coordinate to La(III), forming a 9-coordination distorted monocapped square prism geometry. In addition, DNA-binding of the complex was studied by EtBr fluoescent probe and the results show that the complex interact with DNA by intercalative mode. CCDC:878971.
