6–8, all six amino functionalities bear hexadecyl chains. Compounds 4–8 are potential candidates for the construction of selective chemical sensors such as specific electrodes for adenosine mono-, di-, and tri-phosphate. In aqueous dimethyl sulphoxide solution, the macrocyclicpolyamine receptor (1) catalyses the phosphorylation by acetylphosphate of phosphate containing substrates R–OP to pyrophosphates R–OPP, via the phosphoramidate intermediate (2), that acts as a molecular phosphorylating agent, converting for instance ADP into ATP.
