A practical synthesis of optically pure alkylphenylvinylphosphine oxides is described, utilizing a nucleophilic displacement at phosphorus to install the vinyl moiety. The products were used to prepare classes of P-stereogenic aminophosphine (PN) and aminohydroxyphosphine (PNO) ligands.
