    The present invention provides: an acrylic acid-maleic acid copolymer (or its salt) which is excellent in performances, such as Mg 2+ scavengeability, clay dispersibility in the presence of Mg 2+ , inhibitability upon Mg(OH) 2 scale, and inhibitability upon CaCO 3 scale; and a production process for such a copolymer (or its salt). The present invention further provides a production process for an aqueous maleic salt solution with a low impurity content which has the advantage of easily giving the above copolymer (or its salt). The present invention still further provides uses of the above copolymer (or its salt) having the above excellent properties.

    The present invention relates to a process for producing a particulate nanocomposite material, in which the particles of the nanocomposite material comprise a) at least one inorganic or organo(semi)metallic phase which comprises at least one (semi)metal M; and b) at least one organic polymer phase. The invention also relates to the nanocomposite materials obtainable by this process. The process comprises the polymerization of at least one monomer MM which has at least one first cationically polymerizable monomer unit A which has a metal or semimetal M, and at least one second cationically polymerizable organic monomer unit B which is joined to the polymerizable unit A via at least one, e.g. 1, 2, 3, or 4, covalent chemical bond, under cationic polymerization conditions under which both the polymerizable monomer unit A and the polymerizable unit B polymerize with breakage of the bond or bonds between A and B, wherein the polymerization is performed in an aprotic solvent in which the nanocomposite material is insoluble, in the presence of at least one polymerization initiator and of at least one further substance selected from α) at least one surface-active substance and β) at least one particulate material.

    The present invention relates to a process for producing an acid-type polymaleic acid and acid-type maleic acid copolymer and also to the usage of the acid-type polymaleic acid and acid-type maleic acid copolymer produced by this process. According to the process of the present invention, the acid-type polymaleic acid and acid-type maleic acid copolymer, which are superior as a water-treating agent and detergent additive, are produced by polymerization 5of acid-type monomers in an aqueous solution. The process is simple and yields a polymer having a low molecular weight and a narrow molecular-weight distribution. The process permits one to economically produce the acid-type polymaleic acid and acid-type maleic acid copolymer which has good quality and outstanding performance as a water-treating agent etc. Thus the invention is a great boon to the industrial field of water treatment.

    This invention provides drilling fluid additives composed of copolymers which are obtainable by an industrially favorable process and superior in heat-resisting property. Furthermore, even though the additives are used in a relatively small amount, those sufficiently prevent change in properties of drilling fluid due to various kinds of hard water components being contained in underground water or cement as well as due to sea water, and the additives are able to display the properties of drilling fluid constantly regardless of presence or absence of salts. Drilling fluid additives of the present invention are composed of water-soluble copolymer ( A ) having average molecular weight of 1,000 - 50,000, which are led from monomer components composed of a monomer ( I ) of 40 - 99.5 molar percentages in a series of unsaturated carboxylic acids, as shown in the following general formula ( I ), and an unsaturated monomer ( II ) of 0.5 - 60 molar percentages in a series of ( meth )allylethers, as shown in the general formula ( II ). In the formula ( I ), each of A1 and A2 independently represents hydrogen, methyl, or -COOX2, and A1 and A2 are not -COOX2 at the same time. A3 represents hydrogen, methyl, or -CH2COOX3 and, in a case that A3 is -CH2COOX3, each of A1 and A2 independently represents hydrogen or methyl. Each of X1, X2, and X3, independently or at the same time represents hydrogen, monovalent metal, divalent metal, ammonium, or organic amine. In the formula ( II ) R1 represents hydrogen or methyl , and Z represents hydroxyl; a sulfonic acid group or its monovalent metal salt, divalent metal salt, ammonium salt, and organic amine salt; a phosphoric ( or phosphorous ) acid group or its monovalent metal salt, divalent metal salt, ammonium salt, and organic amine salt.
