Geometric design rules for the assembly of metal-organic capsules were derived. The preferred diastereomeric configurations of Zn8L6 pseudo-cubes, with T, Th, S6 and D3 symmetry, are shown to depend upon the aspect ratio and conformational flexibility of their constituent rectangular subunits. Computational methods allowed further design principles to be deciphered.
