Symmetrical vicinal (R*,R*)-d,l-diamines were prepared from the corresponding imines and low valent titanium species generated by the action of titanium tetrachloride on amalgamated magnesium.

Monoacylation of symmetricaldiamine is achieved when the primary α,ω-diamines (carbon numbers n = 3, 5 and 12) are diluted in ethyl acetate, and the resultant mixture is electrosprayed across a 10 mm distance in ambient air toward a mass spectrometer. The N-acylated product is formed in charged microdroplets without acidifying and activating agents and in the absence of heat. This result provided

The stoicheiometric reaction of suitable aliphatic amines or imines with iodine at 400–600° produces pyridine. In the presence of calcium oxide, which removes the hydrogen iodide also formed, a yield of pyridine of 65% may be obtained. Addition of oxygen permits the use of less than the stoicheiometric quantity of iodine. A mechanism is proposed.
