    A process for producing a polyphenylene ether by oxidative polymerization of a phenol compound using a catalyst and an oxygen-containing gas, wherein the catalyst comprises a copper compound, a bromine compound, a diamine compound represented by the following formula (1) : (wherein, R1, R2, R3 and R4 each independently represents hydrogen or a C1-6 linear or branched alkyl group with the proviso that all of them do not represent hydrogen simultaneously, and R5 represents a linear or methyl-branched C2-5 alkylene group), a tertiary monoamine compound and a secondary monoamine compound, wherein the process comprises the steps of: controlling the absolute pressure at a gaseous phase of a reaction vessel to a range of from 0.098 MPa to less than 0.392 MPa; and feeding the oxygen-containing gas to the reaction vessel, the oxygen-containing gas having an oxygen partial pressure, in terms of an absolute pressure, of from 0.0147 MPa to 0.0883 MPa.

    Disclosed are: a high-performance polyphenylene ether-organoclay complex which is significantly improved in fire retardancy, durability (e.g., light resistance, chemical resistance, impact resistance), an ability of being extruded into a sheet and the like; and others. The polyphenylene ether-organoclay complex can be produced by: preparing a mixture comprising a solvent, a catalyst, a phenolic compound and an organoclay, wherein the organoclay is contained in an amount of 0.1 to 20 parts by mass relative to 100 parts by mass of the phenolic compound; contacting the mixture with an oxygen-containing gas to cause the oxidative polymerizationof the phenolic compound; and removing the solvent and the catalyst from the resulting polymerization mixture. This method is applicable to the production of a complex of an organoclay with other polymers such as an aromatic polycarbonate, a polyether imide and a polyacrylate.

    A polyphenylene ether resin composition obtainable by melt-mixing a polyphenylene ether (A) comprising a structural unit (a) represented by the following formula (1): (wherein R1 and R2 each independently represent a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, an optionally substituted alkyl group, and the like), and/or a structural unit (b) represented by the following formula (2): (wherein R3 and R4 each independently represent a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, an optionally substituted alkyl group, and the like), with a nitrogen compound (B) comprising at least one group selected from the group consisting of primary amino groups, secondary amino groups and tertiary amino groups in a single molecule thereof, wherein the polyphenylene ether (A) comprises 0.1% by mass or more and 1.5% by mass or less of at least one type of aromatic hydrocarbon (C) containing 7 or 8 carbon atoms.

    [Problem to be Solved] An object of the present invention is to provide a polyphenylene ether powder that has a high loose apparent specific gravity and good handleability, as well as a high solvent solubility, and good covering properties by coating, applying and the like, and further, when formed as a covering film, providing the covering film with excellent mechanical properties. [Solution] The polyphenylene ether powder according to the present invention has a loose apparent specific gravity of 0.40 or more and 0.85 or less, and includes 5 to 20 mass% of a component having a molecular weight of 50,000 or more and 12 to 30 mass% of a component having a molecular weight of 8,000 or less.

    Provided is a method for producing polyphenylene ether (PPE) having excellent mechanical properties, heat aging resistance, and color, and in which the content of impurities such as low molecular weight components and catalyst metal is low. The method for producing PPE includes: performing oxidative polymerization of a phenolic compound in a polymerization solution containing the phenolic compound, a catalyst, and an aromatic solvent to obtain a PPE mixed liquid; precipitating PPE to obtain a slurry containing particulate PPE through addition of a polar solvent to the PPE mixed liquid; solid-liquid separating the slurry to obtain wet PPE particles; washing the wet PPE particles to obtain PPE particles through at least one cycle of a washing and solid-liquid separation process in which washing is performed with a washing liquid containing an aromatic solvent and a polar solvent, and in which solid-liquid separation is performed; and drying the PPE particles.
