    The present disclosure provides an antibacterial hydrophilic compound. The antibacterial hydrophilic compound may react, induced by light through a hydrogen abstraction group in the structural formula thereof, with a C—H group and thus bind to a surface of a material having the C—H group (for example, chemical fibers such as polyester, chinlon, and the like; plastics, rubbers, and other similar materials), which can impart a durable antibacterial activity and hydrophilicity to the material. The antibacterial hydrophilic compound has a relatively strong binding force to the surface of the material without damaging the mechanical properties of the raw material. The present disclosure also provides a modified material that is modified by the antibacterial hydrophilic compound.

    A method for the reduction of the content of toxic chlorinated aromatic compounds such as chlorinated aromatic dioxins and especially chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins in reaction products to virtually zero consisting essentially of reacting a mass containing chlorinated aromatic dioxins with an amount, in excess of stoichiometrical based on the total organic halogen content, of alkaline reactants selected from the group consisting of (1) alkali metal alcoholates of alcohols selected from the group consisting of alkanols having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms, polyalkoxyalkane glycols having 4 to 20 carbon atoms, alkanepolyols having from 2 to 5 carbon atoms and 2 to 3 hydroxyls, and monoalkyl ethers of such alkanepolyols with alkanols having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, or (2) mixtures of said alcohols with alkaline reactants selected from the group consisting of alkali metal hydroxides and carbonates, at a reaction temperature of from 140°C. to 220°C. for a time sufficient to convert the organic halogen into inorganic halide, recovering a reaction mass essentialiy free of chlorinated aromatic dioxins, and optionally suspending said recovered reaction mass in water and extracting with an organic solvept to remove any minute residual chlorinated aromatic dioxins, and recycling said solvent extract to said reacting step.

    Biopolymer PS-87, a heteropolysaccharide comprising glucose, galactose, mannose, glucuronic acid and fucose, is pseudoplastic and has a consistency at 20°C of at least 150 poise and a yield stress value at 20°C of at least 30 dynes/cm2. Biopolymer PS-87 is synthesized by a specific strain or mutant of Bacillus polymyxa (NCIB 11429) or by micro-organisms which have undergone genetic manipulations. This heteropolysaccharide has many domestic and industrial applications as a suspending agent or thickener.

    An improved moulding composition is provided compris- ng an oxymethylene polymer, a blocked or unblocked isocyanate compound in an amount of 0.2 to 2.0 percent of the weight of the polymer, a filler and an isocyanate-active catalyst. Shaped articles produced from the composition exhibit desirable mechanical properties without the need for fibrous reinforcing agents.

    Novel non-elastomeric biomedical adhesive compositions for calcified tissues, are described. The compositions are characterized by a network structure which is obtained by the reaction of a polyisocyanate having at least two isocyanate groups with at least one polyol which possesses surface wetting properties with the participation of coumpounds selected from calcium and phosphorus, optional in the presence of a catalyst. The polyisocyanate is selected from aliphatic, alicyclic and aromatic compounds and preferred amounts are in the range of 20% to 80% by weight of the total amount of reactants. The polyol is selected from polyalkylene ether glycols and polyester glycols containing between 25 to 75 carbon atoms and preferred amounts are in the range of 10% to 80% by weight of the total amount of reactants. The adhesive compositions were found to produce a fast bonding of the calcified tissues, with a joint strength of above 0.5 N/sq.mm.
