  An optically active compound represented by the following formula (I): wherein R₁ denotes a linear or branched alkyl group having 1 - 18 carbon atoms optionally including one or non-neighboring two or more methylene groups which can be replaced with -X- or with the proviso that X denotes O or S and Y denotes halogen; R₂ denotes a linear alkyl group having 4 - 8 carbon atoms: and C* denotes an optically active asymmetric carbon atom. The mesomorphic compound is effective for providing a ferroelectric liquid crystal composition showing improved response characteristics and also effective for suppressing occurrence of reverse domain.
