Secondary and tertiary aralkylamines can be prepared with good yield and selectivity by reacting an aromatic vinylic olefin, a nitrogen-containing compound, and synthesis gas comprising carbon monoxide and hydrogen (or in an alternative embodiment, CO and H20), in the presence of a catalyst comprising a ruthenium-containing compound and an amide solvent at a temperature of at least 100°C and a pressure of at least 1.45 MPa.
Linear products are obtained preferentially under these conditions, but when a quarternary phosphonium compound is added, branched products are also obtained in good yields.
