    The molecular weight distribution of carboxymethylcellulose or its salt is determined by gel permeation chromatography using a metal-amine complex and/or a metal-alkali complex as the mobile phase solvent. The column geometry (inside diameter/length) and flow rate for this determination are 1:40-100 and 0.2-0.5 ml/min., respectively. According to this method, the GPC determination of molecular weight distribution can be performed under the same conditions for both starting pulp and CMC.

    A nitrogen adsorbent comprising a crystalline X zeolite having a faujasite structure with an SiO2/Al2O3 ratio of less than 3.0, wherein the crystal contains at least one trivalent element of the group consisting of Fe, B and Ga and (AlO4)5− tetrahedral units thereof associated with cations. Although the adsorbent contains a designated trivalent element in the zeolite, it maintains the number of cation sites contributing to adsorption, has an excellent separation performance of nitrogen and oxygen, and exhibits excellent heat resistance. Further, when the nitrogen adsorbent of the present invention is used in such a particular manner that it adsorbs nitrogen after being heated under a vacuum, adsorption performance is improved.

    There is provided a method for producing iron methacrylate being inexpensive, and being high in activity and selectivity and good in solubility to a reaction liquid when being used in production of a hydroxyalkyl methacrylate as a catalyst. The method for producing iron methacrylate for production of a hydroxyalkyl methacrylate according to the present invention includes subjecting a mixture of a metallic iron having an oxygen atom content by XRF analysis of the surface thereof of 6% by mass or lower, and methacrylic acid to a heat treatment at 95° C. or higher and lower than 110° C. for 100 to 600 min. The method for producing a hydroxyalkyl methacrylate according to the present invention includes reacting an alkylene oxide with methacrylic acid to produce the hydroxyalkyl methacrylate, wherein iron methacrylate produced by the method according to the present invention is used as a catalyst.
