A limitation of the Dyke method for synthesizing benzo [c] phenanthridine alkaloids through the 1, 2-dihydroisoquinoline derivatives prepared by means of the Pomeranz-Fritsch reaction was clarified ; the method is not applicable to such alkaloids having an alkoxy group at the C10 position.
