Abstract Sucrose esters, O -acylated in the glucopyranosyl group, occur as flavour precursors in various tobaccos. In order to obtain such esters, a sucrose derivative, namely, 6- O -acetyl-3- O -allyl-1′,3′,4′,6′-tetra- O -benzyl-2- O -(4-methoxybenzyl)sucrose was synthesised with a substitution pattern which allows the preparation of derivatives having other acyl groups at positions 2, 3, or 4.
