Acenaphthenequinone was obtained in 95% yield when the reaction of 1-acenaphthenone with N-bromosuccinimide was carried out in dimethyl sulfoxide at room temperature. Under similar conditions, several acenaphthenequinones were prepared from the corresponding 1-acenaphthenones in good yields.

Acenaphthylene, the monomethylacenaphthylenes, and some dimethylacenaphthylenes have been identified in cigarettesmoke condensate. An anthracene derivative with a specified asymmetrical type structure. An organic electroluminescence device which comprises at least one organic thin film layer including a light emitting layer sandwiched between a pair of electrode consisting of an anode and a cathode, wherein at least one of the organic thin film layer comprises the anthracene derivative. An organic electroluminescence device which emits blue light of enhanced purity and has a long lifetime is provided.
